   Linking Multiple HTML Files

Once you have created a second web page, you will want to link your two pages. Linking pages together in Netscape Gold 3.0 is a simple task. Just follow these steps and you'll be on your way.

First, you will need to identify the page to which you want to jump. You can do this by merely keying the name of that page. Once you have the name of the page keyed, highlight it, and choose the Make Link icon on the toolbar. Click on the Browse File button; double-click on the name of the file to which you want to link. Continue by clicking Apply and OK. That's all there is to it.

Always test your newly created links to make sure they are working correctly. Choose File, Browse Document; then click on the linked text to jump to the link you identified. As you create more and more pages in your Web presentation, making sure that all of your pages link together correctly is more of a challenge.

Targets and Anchors Revisited

In an earlier lesson, you learned how to create targets and anchors within your Web page. Now that you have designed more than one page, you may decide that it would be beneficial to jump to a location on one of your other pages. On my tutorial pages, you will notice that I have provided, in table format, the contents of each page. Using the anchor and target feature allows the individual to go directly to the selected topic, rather than having to scroll down a long page.

The process of creating targets and anchors within a Web presentation is the same one we used to created targets and anchors within a single page. Let's say I wanted to link this section to the lesson in which targets and anchors were first introduced. I could include a statement such as:

For a review of targets and anchors, click here

Remember, you must first create your target. In this instance, I opened MoreLinks.html in the editing mode, created a new target named Targets by placing the cursor immediately to the left of the word Targets in the section entitled HTML Anchors and Targets.. Once I had my target in position, I highlighted the word here in the statement above and clicked on the Make Link icon. Then, I clicked the Browse button to find the MoreLinks html file with its list of targets. By selecting Targets I completed my link.

Using Multiple Browsers

Although Netscape commands a very large portion of the browser market, you should be aware of the fact that not everyone will access your page via Netscape. As mentioned in What's HTML Anyway, this can create problems in that your Web pages may not look the same when viewed with other browsers. For example, some browsers do not recognize frames; others may not show tables exactly the same way they were created in Netscape Gold. Graphic images may also look different from one browser to the other. So, view your page using other browsers, and be aware of the fact that at times it may be necessary to modify your presentation so that it will appear the best it possibly can in a number of situations.

Troubleshooting

In spite of all your best efforts, you will find that things go wrong. Links won't work, graphic images won't load, and a wide range of other malfunctions will plague your creations at one time or another. The good news is that, as is often the case, we learn best from the struggle we experience as we troubleshoot problems.

Certainly, it would be advisable to use the online help available by selecting Handbook from the Help menu. However, there are a lot of other resources available to Web page designers, including a variety of books on using Netscape Gold. Likewise, books on HTML can be especially helpful. In addition, by using search engines you can find websites that offer tutorials on web page creation and an extensive selection of text editing shareware.

Although the focus of this introductory course in Web page design has been on the use of Netscape Gold as the primary text editor, I would be remiss if I did not highlight the fact that gaining a working knowledge of HTML language is an invaluable tool. You might like to check out HTML for the Conceptually Challenged. This site advertises that it teaches HTML as fast as humanly possible.

The text editor that I use in conjunction with Netscape Gold is Arachnophilia, a user-friendly program that is fairly intuitive in its approach. I strongly recommend that you add to your library of resources and that you continue exploring all the possibilities that will enable you to present even more advanced, informative Web creations. Plus, these resources are especially helpful in the troubleshooting stage of Web authoring.
