97th Bomb Groups 300th mission On approach to the Oil refinery the Lead ships bombs did not drop so we had to circle for another pass. At that time the formation was jumped by between 20 - 30 fighters, (ME 210-410's). We then diverted to the alternate which was the Brod Marshalling Yards. Plane 056 was hit in #2 & 4 engines. He had to drop out of formation and the fighters jumped him. 7 chutes seen. Had 8th Air Force escort over target. |

Last mission…Reached 16,000 feety over Yugoslavia and had to turn back. Had smoke coming from #4. Engine flew 30 minutes as not indication of mechanical trouble except for smoke. Found bad carburetor and that we burned so much gas we would not have had enough to make it back. Used 120 extra gallons of gas in 3 hours Salvoed bombs and landed. |

Last mission…Reached 16,000 feety over Yugoslavia and had to turn back. Had smoke coming from #4. Engine flew 30 minutes as not indication of mechanical trouble except for smoke. Found bad carburetor and that we burned so much gas we would not have had enough to make it back. Used 120 extra gallons of gas in 3 hours Salvoed bombs and landed. |
