Equipment
To get the best results, use the right equipment.

Choke chain (Stainless Steel) - measure his neck and add two to three inches. The chain should be 2-3 inches too large from a perfect snug fit. Place the chain on the dog so it forms a “P” when you are on the dog’s right (your left). When you connect the lead, follow the chain from the lead’s hook. It should first run over the top of the dogs neck then back around the underneath towards you.

15’ (cotton) light long line - Must be light, not retractable and not two leashes together.

6’ (leather) lead - leather doesn’t stretch when pulled and gives the best correction.

Proper use of Choke Chain

Trace fingers down lead, across clip, onto choke chain. Follow the chain. It should go over the top of the dogs neck first then around to meet up with it. If the chain goes under the chin first from the clip then it’s on backwards.

The smaller the links the better the correction. With larger dogs that are learning and are receiving a stronger correction (i.e., dog that bolts to end of line) use a larger link to ensure that the links don’t break.
