Again, first we must determine the reason he is jumping. This in itself will give you insight on how to counter his motivations.

Greeting- If your dog jumps you at the door, you can try a few things. First, the baby gate, my personal best friend. We have a gate up at the second room in the house so we can get in and settled before we get mauled. Second, the ‘sit for a cookie’ when you come home trick. Keep cookie’s in your pocket or just inside the door. You can add a stay until they calm down too. Third, grab his collar and lock your arm straight down so that he can’t jump up. Hold him here and pet him calmly until he settles. You can now put him in a sit if you’ld like for a cookie. Fourth, have a lead just in the door and clip him immediately and put him in a sit until he calms. Fifth, send him straight outside to burn off the excitement energy.

Play, wrestling, and to get your attention- If your dog jumps at you when you play or when your ignoring him, try to find a trigger. Is there a point in the play where he escalates and starts to jump? Try to calm play before he escalates. Usually there is a sign. Stop him before the adrenaline kicks in. To stop him, give him a ‘time out’ just like the kids. Time Out for a dog is Sit/Stay or Down/Stay. You can step on his leash until he settles or grab his collar and calm him.

Aggression- If your dog jumps at you and means you harm, consult a professional trainer. The wrong response on your part can not only get you hurt, but it could leave a behavior imprint with him that he is the alpha and disciplining you is okay.
