Lesson Four
Sit Stay

While your dog is at the sit, hold your left hand directly over her head at the leash clip. While maintaining this hand position, take your right hand and give the STAY hand signal, (open hand in front of the face) and say the work “STAY”. (remain upright) Be careful not to change the position of your left hand, and step out in front of your dog - toe to toe. Repeat the STAY command. Watch your leash pressure, not too tight and not too loose. If your dog tries to break the stay, use the sit correction to replace them back in the sit. This is the purpose for staying toe to toe. You can issue a command quickly and effectively in this position.

Hold this position for 30 seconds and then return to heel position, do not release or praise for 15 seconds. They have to learn that just because you are back, they are free to do as they please. Dogs are smart and they will break the stay and meet you half way when you are returning from an “away-stay” if you set a bad precedent.

DRILL

1. On a few of your automatic sits, introduce the STAY command. Do not do it every time, you don’t want to be predictable.

2. Heel, stop, say SIT, sit response, hold the sit command for 30 seconds to a minute to increase the attention span and ready them for the STAY command.

3. Heel, stop, say SIT, sit response, get proper left hand position, say STAY and give the hand signal with your right hand, maintain left hand position, step out in front of your dog - toe to toe, say STAY, hold position for 30 seconds to a minute, return yourself to heel position, wait 15 seconds, praise lightly, say HEEL, resume heeling.
