Lesson Six
Sit Stay 6'

Lead Choice: 6’ Review Lesson 4. Warm your dog up with a few ‘toe to toe’ stays. Now try to move two steps to the left and then to the right. Keep your hand high, over his head holding the lead. If he attempts to follow you and get up, quickly pull up and back on the lead over his head. (It’s the same correction as the sit, only in a different position. Next, attempt to walk all the way around him in a full circle. Again, if he tries to follow and circle with you, say “No, Sit” firmly and sharply and replace him into his original position.

Once you have successfully circled around your dog, return to heel position. Heel 25 paces and repeat the stay. On your next stay, move out ‘toe to toe’ and then take a slow steady step backward. Repeat the “Sit, Stay” command as you move. Keep your hand high. Step backwards again until you reach the end of your lead. Repeat the “Sit, Stay” command. Check your body posture. Be sure you are upright and not angled forward. Count off 30 seconds and return to the ‘toe to toe’ position. Repeat the “Sit, Stay” command and return to heel position. Count off 5 seconds and say “okay” to release and praise.
