Urinating
"I have a 1 year old cocker spaniel that piddles on the floor whenever I come home.
My sister says she isn't housebroken. Is this true?"

Your first course of action should be to see your vet. You want to be sure that there aren’t any medical reason for her behavior. Next, consider the age of your dog. If she is young it’s probably a behavior issue, if she is old, perhaps incontinence is setting in.

In the case of the dog that urinates when excited or nervous, the cause is usually over submissiveness. Never yell at him or punish him for nervous peeing. He needs a confidence booster. Obedience classes work wonders as relationship builders, and ultimately bring up your dogs esteem. There are no majic commands to cure behavior problems. You have to use the commands she knows to re-establish new patterns of behavior. Repetition, consistancy and follow-through are the key.

Another method would be to send him straight outside when you get home and/or to ignore him as you walk in. Wait until he has settled before you acknowledge him.

Some dogs will urinate in the house because they are upset that you left them, or that you now give your attention to a new baby.... Temper, Temper. This is a behavior issue. Crate training would be benificial until he learned to control his temper.

Unaltered male dogs will mark their territory with urine. It is a sign of dominance and ownership. For example, your dog may not mark in your house, but when you go visiting friends, he will mark their house.
