"(His) life is a story of success won by hard work, shrewd business sense, the ability to take advantage of trends in his chosen trade of hosiery and thrift which allowed him to take advantage of opportunities." He had come to the city at the age of 15 and started work as a turner boy in William Clow and Son Hosiery Mill which he was able to purchase when it was liquidated.
