I saw both Tabur and Hale-Bopp comet. Tabur looks like a small diffuse spot having size appr. 7-8 arcmin. I couldn't see its tale. Only the head was seen. Tonight, October 10, it was seen not far from beta-Ursa Major. A small star was seen through its coma. I can say nothing about this star because it is absent in my star map. I can observe this comet by binocular-20x and monocular-6x only. Hale-Bopp comet is seen also by these instruments. But in binocular I saw only its head and in monocular I saw its tale too. I can estimate its head size in 14-15 arcmin and its tale 2-3 times longer. Now it can be seen in the first 10-15 minutes of shadow in our orbit. Than it is eclipsed by the Earth. It's very nice picture. Thanks a lot for info and your assistance. I am so lucky to see them. I understood from your msgs that you are interested in comets too, aren't you? By. 73 Alex U8MIR P.S. Thank you very much for very-very interesting information about Hale-Bopp. I red Sekanina opinion with great interest. But I prefer more interesting hypothesis instead of F.Whipple theory. The hypothesis was published in the USSR by Victor K.Davydov in Space Research Journal in 1983-1988 in many issues before and after Halley comet. He was a scientist of Russian Science Academy Space Research Institute in Moscow. He supposed a comet nucleus consisting usually of a set of bodies orbiting around the common centre of mass of such a system. It may be 2-4 main bodies and up to dozens small satelites. Of course they have very complicated motion and they may collide each other. As a result of such collisions may be: -a cloud of crashed comet material increasing its brightness many times; nucleus; -a conglomerate of collided bodies, i.e. a single-body comet nucleus; -loosing these bodies, result is a single-body nucleus and sometimes comet twins. The origin of this multiple nucleus may be the result of the close fly-by the giant planet like Neptun by the original comet body. First this body may be destructed by tidal forces, second the body or system of bodies acquire rotational motion due to planet gravitational field. I think Hale-Bopp is the very multiple nucleus comet. And its unprecedent investigations will help the scientists to make a choice between Whipple theory and this hypothesis. Thank you for your attention and sorry for my English. I tried to formulate it in English for the first time. I'll be very thankfull for any info about this comet. 73 Alex U8MIR CMD(B/H/J/K/KM/L/M/R/S/SR/V/?)> k 83 Message erased CMD(B/H/J/K/KM/L/M/R/S/SR/V/?)> Msg # Stat Date Time To From @ BBS Subject 139 P 10/17/96 00:08 N1PPP R0MIR H-B CMD(B/H/J/K/KM/L/M/R/S/SR/V/?)> r 139 Stat : PR Posted : 10/17/96 00:08 To : N1PPP From : R0MIR @ BBS : xID : Subject: H-B CPACTIME ON SENDPAC $00 CONV Hi Dave! Tonight, October 16, I observed Hale-Bopp by binocular 20x. Its size isn't changed by my eye. I saw clear two areas of brightness: one of isometric form and more bright and the other long in direction opposite to the Sun. I am not experienced observer and cann't define the brightness but I saw its set. It was seen very well through the atmosphere. H-B is located now not far from not so bright star. And they sinked below the horizont appr. simultaneously. I lost the star at first and I saw the comet 10-12 seconds more. As to Tabur today it is homogeneous isometric spot. Its brightness is the same as the H-B one. By the way I saw not bright spot 10-15 arcmin in diameter not father than 5 deg from H-B. Its brightness was a bit I hope H-B will be uncredible next year. Some of our results are rather interesting. We have a light curve of the nuclear condensation (approx. 6' aperture) over the full period of observation. This light curve has come up with some interesting results, some of which contradict what we have thought previously: 1.Jet events are very clearly seen in the light curve as big bursts in the nuclear magnitude. The September jet shows up as a 2 magnitude brightening in broad-band R. The August jet looks as if it may have been even bigger (perhaps 3 magnitudes), but our light curve is only well-sampled well into the decline. The September event reached maximum in 2 days, declining from there back to quiescence. I received all your and Jay msgs but was busy and couldn't answer. Valery toldme that you had a voice contact. Tonight have QSO with Triton scool. We ansered their questions. Every day I observe H-B. I know that I can distinguish by my eye appr 3-4% in bright between two close areas. So I compare the brightness of so called first emissional layer (FEL) and H-B passing behind it when it sink. Till October 21 H-B was about 10% more bright. On 21th the difference was a bit above my vision threshold i.e. not more than 5% . I don't think that the comet brightness got down. So the FEL was more bright. Maybe it was due to the Orionid meteor shower. It's well known that the upper atmosphere get dusty this time. On 22th and 23th H-B was usual 10% above the FEL. Tonight it is more than 10% . Yesterday it seemed me and today I'm sure that there is a small bright spot like point in the center of its head. As to Tabur Mir station has now un suitable attitude for its observation. I saw it last time some days ago. Pity! It was in the Big Dipper and not so bright like a fortnight ago. By the way. Yesterday I saw a foggy spot near Jupiter. Its coordinates (appr): R.A. 18h 40m; D -25- -27deg. It is near sigma- and fi- Sagittarii. It is in diameter 20-30arcmin and estimates more bright than H-B. Ok. Thank you for your attention. Some days before closing we were loading it by the used equipment, waste, trash etc. Hard work. Next night the docking of new Progress is planned. And if it's Ok in early December we'll have an EVA. Today we began to get ready the airlock and our spacesuits for the future spacewalk. On Saturday and Sunday I observed Leonid. Very nice! So many meteorits! On 17th I saw a bolid. At first it was yellow. Then it was getting bright and changing its colour from yellow to green. It was visible appr 8-10 sec. It was interesting to see meteorites above the Earth's horizon. They were both vertical and oblique. The average altitude of their occuring was 110-120 km but some of them had up to 150 km in heigh. And all of them had a light-blue colour. I was interrupted. I had a very nice chat on phone with my wife. This is her birthday. My son has already 4 teeth!
