First, a little about myself.
I am a senior at Inter-Lakes High School in
Meredith
New Hampshire, a small rural town, yet
one filled with numerous opportunities to reach out and make a difference.
Living in a rural setting has given me the wonderful chance to become involved
in a wide array of activities and to branch out to many parts of the community.
Inter-Lakes High School is a small school comprised of approximately 600
students, yet it still manages to offer a very challenging and rigorous
curriculum, one that has been extremely beneficial to me academically and
personally. The small classes and superior faculty have given me the opportunity
to excel both in and out of school, and have helped feed my thirst for
knowledge.
It is my goal and my aspiration to become an attorney. I have had much exposure to the legal profession throughout my high school career, and this has only strengthened my desire to pursue this profession. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take a personal business law class, and it has proven to me that law is a field I would be extremely happy and successful in. I also have had the unique opportunity to experience the legal process hands-on, as I am a participant in our local teen court, in which I have the chance to take part in the proceedings for first-time juvenile offenders as an attorney, bailiff, clerk, or jury member. Participating in this program has not only given me additional exposure to the legal profession, it has also given me another opportunity to reach out into the community and help other students who are struggling with various issues. This experience will surely add greatly to my legal repertoire and will continue to give me new insights on the profession. As a result of my involvement in Teen Court, I was invited to appear on "The Exhange," a program on New Hampshire Public Radio in order to provide insights on the new legislation aimed at teenagers that is being introduced this year. This was a truly exciting experience for all involved, and will hopefully positively affect surrounding communities.
During my 4 years in high school, I have participated in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities that have been essential to my success. These activities have given me the leadership and people skills that are necessary for prosperity. I am very passionate about my activities outside of school, and I believe that my life wouldn't be the same without them.
Over the past 4 years, I have
had a vision that has had a great impact on my school involvement. This vision
is of a school where the teachers are facilitators, and the students are the
driving force of learning. In hopes to bring my school closer to this vision, I
have taken the initiative to research and discuss various methods of school
reform with my principal, guidance counselor, and fellow students. I have
attended several conferences on school change and various topics including
School To Work and block scheduling. After attending a conference at Geneva
Point conference center, I presented, along with two other students, at the
School To Work breakfast held for
community members and business leaders. It has certainly been rewarding and
satisfying to see these changes implemented in the school and enhancing the
education of my fellow students.
Another major
extra-curricular activity that have become heavily involved with has dealt with
the arts, musical theater in particular. Musical theater productions have been
a few of the major highlights of my high school career, as well as my life. I
began my musical theater career at the age of 5, when I starred as Gretel in
The Sound Of Music put on by the Holbrook Friends of the Arts in
Holbrook, Massachusetts. This opened my eyes to the world of musical theater
and was the beginning of my love of acting. Freshman year my school put on the
musical Pirates of Penzance. It was terrific to have the part as a
comic police officer. Sophomore year I played a "fish" in the musical
My One and Only. In this play I had the opportunity to learn some dance
and it was wonderful to expand my skills even more. Last year, junior year, my
school put on Bye Bye Bridie. I was in the teen trio, and thoroughly
enjoyed playing a crazed-out teenager. This year, we are putting on The
Music Man, and I will play the role as Maud Dunlop. Theater has added
another dimension to my life, and has shown to me the life than can emerge from
just a piece of paper with black ink.

The past two years I have
been part of a group known as the Peer Educators. Our purpose is to assist our
fellow students in making wise choices that will have positive effects on their
heath, relationships, and many other aspects of their lives. Since the group
went through training, we have been making presentations to the junior high as
well as promoting positive living and change. Having the opportunity to work
with others and help them in many aspects of their lives has given me new
perspectives and has added greatly to my life.
When I was inducted in to the
National Honor Society, I had no idea what a wonderful organization I was
joining. Since my induction last spring, I have participated in many activities
with the Honor Society, including the Annual Blood Drive, which was a great
success.
One of my major involvements
over the last 4 years has been in
Cheerleading. Not only is
cheerleading fun, it is also rewarding. It has given me the leadership skills,
self-confidence, team ethics, and the opportunity to compete at the Kiwanis
Tournament and various state tournaments.

Freshman year I took part on
the Odyssey of the Mind team. My team won
the Regional competition and made it to the State competition. On this team I
was able to use many of my different areas of knowledge and apply them to real
problems. OM is a wonderful program, and I regret that I have been unable to
participate henceforth.
Having played the clarinet
for 8 years, I have been heavily involved with my High School Band. Freshman
year I was chosen to play at the Lakes Region Music Festival, and this
experience was incredibly gratifying. This year I also have begun to explore my
vocal talents, and have joined chorus and will sing in the Lakes Region Music
Festival in the winter. Music has, and always will be, a very important part
of my life.
Freshman year I was chosen by
my teachers to participate in a program called
S.T.E.M., or Savings Through Energy
Management. In this program, we spent an extensive amount of time evaluating
the energy problems in our school, after which we presented our findings with
proposed solutions to the school board. This is a great program for schools
that are in dire need of energy saving strategies in order to conserve not only
energy, but money.
Community Service has been an integral part of my life. I have been involved with multitudes of projects and organizations, and I will highlight them below.
At the age of 11 I made a
commitment to my community when I joined the
International Order of Rainbow for
Girls.Over the years, I have moved up the ranks in this order to attain the
title of Worthy Advisor, the highest leadership position in my assembly,
Plymouth Assembly
#10. In this position I was responsible for running meetings and organizing
functions, as well as having my own community service project. Prior to my
term as Worthy Advisor, I was involved in many service projects, such as
collecting baby items for needy new mothers, singing at the nursing home,
collecting toys for operation Santa Claus, and other various activities. During
my term I chose the Humane Society as my
charity because of my deep concern for homeless animals. I organized a
collection of dog and cat food, and raised a tremendous amount to donate to our
local shelter. Currently, I hold the title of Grand Chaplain for the state of
New Hampshire, and am still active in my local assembly. Rainbow has added a
tremendous amount to my life, both spiritually and intellectually. It has
taught me that I can do anything as long as I have faith, and I will hold on to
this for eternity.

Sophomore year I was an
integral part in the beginning of the group
NH SAY,
New Hampshire Service Active Youth. We started from scratch--from naming
ourselves to defining our goals and principles. We took the stand of getting
youth involved in community service, and after receiving training at a camp
called Merrowvista,
we presented and the state wide Learn and Serve conference. In this group I
also was able to share many community service activities such as working at the
homeless shelter and at the local food pantry, and make many new friends from
across the state.
This past summer I had the
opportunity to volunteer at Lakes Region General Hospital. I worked there about
3 hours a week, and the experience was unforgettable. Reflecting back on my
experience, I realize how important it is to reach out to fellow community
members in time of need and bring a smile to their day.
Awards and honors I have received include...
I have been fortunate enough to continue learning and growing during the summers of my high school years, and have had many wonderful opportunities that have enabled me to expand my horizons and open up new doors in my life. These programs have been a vital part in shaping who I am today, and I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to gain from these experiences.
The summer after my
Freshman year, I was chosen to attend the Summer Sea Sessions at
Maine Maritime Academy in Castine,
Maine. This was a most wonderful experience for me, and introduced me to the
current love I possess of our great ecosystem. I was able to learn a wide
variety of skills, that ranged from navigation to analyzing the ecosystem of a
certain area. If any other students have a passion for learning, I urge you to
apply to this week long session , for it is truly an exciting and fulfilling
experience.

The summer after my
Sophomore year took on an entirely new perspective. I was chosen to attend the
"Women In Technology" program at the
New Hampshire Technical Institute in
Concord, New Hampshire. This program exposed to me a number of new careers that
women have generally not ventured in the past, and opened my eyes to the many
exciting fields there are open to women in this day and age. I was able to see
these careers first hand and learn more about what careers I might like to
pursue in the future. This proved to have great value in shaping my career
goals.
That same summer I was
twice-blessed, for I was also chosen to represent my school at the
Hugh O'Brien Leadership Seminar.
This seminar was stimulating and eye-opening, because I was able to speak to
prominent business leaders, politicians, and other leaders. What I gained from
this seminar was immense...leadership skills, professionalism, and teamwork. I
have continued to be involved on the Alumni Board, and hope the lucky and
deserving students that are chosen to attend conference will be affected in the
same intensity I was.
The summer after my Junior
year took an even different turn, as I was able to travel to
Costa Rica and learn about its
culture. My best friend was an exchange student there, so I had the unique
opportunity to live with her host family and fully immerse myself in Costa Rican
culture. After seeing a culture other than the one I was brought up in, I took
on a whole new perspective on life and the American society. My outlook on my
future has changed, as I begin to realize that the only tool in which to measure
success is happiness.

My hobbies include...
Free-lance sports, such
as hiking,
skiing, and tennis. I enjoy doing
sports to compete with myself, not so much to compete with others. The beauty
of sport is that if you strive to reach new goals, then you can only get
better.
