Physical Education at GVS:

Mrs. Williams reports that classes are off to a great start in Phys. Ed. In fact, different classes are already working on different skills.

Grades 1-2 are working on basic skill development and following directions. They are also beginning an exciting new program involving the integration of Juggling into the curriculum. Based on a pilot program in Jacksonville, Florida, Mrs Williams' students are practicing tossing and catching scarves and other small objects first with one hand, then from hand to hand. The activity has been shown to improve hand-eye coordination, increased self esteem, increased self discipline, and cardiovascular wellness. The benefits seen in Florida were improved confidence and competence in locomotor and manipulative skills. As quoted in Teaching Elementary Physical Education: "The 'Juggling for Success' program is developmentally appropriate for all children and has been designed to fulfill the rigorous guidelines of the Council on Physical Education for Children (COPEC) and the NAtional Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE)." By the way, it's also fun.....

Grades 3-4 are building skills working on small teams, and also are working on learning soccer skills.

Grades 5-6 are also working on soccer strategies and teamwork building.

Mrs. Williams has started her Fitness Challenge Program for 1996-97. Additional information about this program is available in our Sept. GVS Newsletter. Students are recognized for each exercise they complete in a week.

You could say that the Phys.Ed. program at GVS is off and running! :-)
