Paul Bunyan Outing

On March 25, 2001 I went to my scoutmaster, Bruce’s house along with other scouts to cut down and clear trees. I arrived at his house at about 9:30 A.M.  Knowing that this would be an all day event, I packed various things including a canteen, an extra sweatshirt, extra socks, and a mess kit to eat with.  When I got there, someone had made this trail leading up a bank to a campsite that these snow banks on the side that were up to my waist and I’m five feet tall!

The first thing we had to do was wait for my friend, Ryan’s dad, Andy, to cut down some trees with his chainsaw.

After the trees were cut down we’d go in with camp saws and axes cutting off the branches on the trees.  Andy then would cut the trees to smaller pieces then we’d put it in the fire at the campsite.

One of the adults brought in a two-man saw so Ryan and I used it.  We didn’t get very far because it kept flopping on us so instead we used this saw with a handle at the end of it.
We had better luck with that.

After that we had tin-foil lunches, which is where you take some vegetables and meat and put it on the fire to cook, flipping it now and then.  After eating we went snowshoeing and played tag on the snow banks.  Before we knew it, it was time to go home.

Then on April 5, 2001 we received a Paul Bunyan award for our efforts.
