It's been almost twenty-eight years since I began making classic, atlantic salmon flies professionally. My mentor in this endeavor is Alex Simpson of Lumphanan, Scotland. He is the spark that ignited the burning passion of dressing classic flies.
The whole thing started out by learning the proper procedures. There were basic guidelines that required no deviation. After five years or so it turned into an artform. At about that point, the flies took on a general style, that has basically lasted to this day. Some call this the dresser's signature. Classic flies are really not that much different from painting, drawing, or sculpturing. The materials are the only things that differ from the traditional arts.
