The first library in Plainfield Village was established in 1805. In 1920 Edmund S. Read wished to honor his father and at the same time provide the people of Plainfield with their own library building. Mr. Read constructed the Philip Read Memorial Library and then offered the library to the town. Library use and services outgrew the facility and an addition to the library was built in 2004. The Hanover High School Quiz Bowl Team had a fantastic Quiz Bowl experience this spring as they won both the Vermont Scholars Bowl on Saturday and the New Hampshire Quiz Bowl League Championship on Sunday. On Saturday, Dylan Matthews, Travers Rhodes, Finola Prendergast, Nick Sinnott-Armstrong, Nick O'Leary and Aaron Watanabe defeated South Burlington (320-185), Champlain Valley (330-230), and Essex (370-210). On Sunday Phil Tosteson substituted for an ailing Finola Prendergast, and the team went undefeated with wins over Phillips Exeter, Londonderry, Portsmouth Christian, Kingswood, Dover, Gorham, and Winnisquam. Dylan, Travers, and Finola were chosen for the Vermont all-star team at the Panasonic Academic Challenge at Disney World in June. The two Nicks will be part of the New Hampshire team at Disney. We all should be very proud of what the team members have accomplished this year!

DID YOU KNOW? The Library Web Page maintains a map of the town of Plainfield. The map is a copy of a map adapted by The Plainfield Conservation Commission of an original by Vernon Hood a long time loved self made historian of the town. Using modern Internet technology we have used the map to develop a source of history and information about the town.
When you view the map you will find icons (hot spots) on the map. Using your mouse you can click on them and a page of information will appear on your computer screen.
Example; there are several cemeteries shown on the map in an approximate location of their actual location. Information about the cemeteries is taken from Choice White Pines and Good Land.
You will find several other (hot spots) to click on and there will be others added as time goes on. Click on a pink square with white cross and you will find a Church. It would be great if anyone who knows of a good location or story, that could be added, would contact us. Click on this link and you will see the map we are talking about.

The Word of the Day was text only;
we have added a voice pronunciation starting, March 30, 2007. When you have the WOD page on screen, find the word you want click on the little red speaker and your computer will use its default audio program to pronounce the word for you. With some browsers the page may temporally disappear while the audio is on. If this happens click on the left arrow at the top left of your browser and your WOD will come back.
After June 15th 2007 the link, as we have it, to the Word of The Day will not be there. The saved Words of The Day will be there to observe or copy if a visitor wants. You can easily go to the More Library link and click on “Webster’s Dictionary “ or click here http://www.m-w.com/dictionary.htm
